Registration of Marriages

REGISTRATION OF MARRIAGES

 

The Registration Insolvency and Trusteeship Agency, (RITA) is a semi-autonomous Agency responsible for among other things in managing the information on key life events which are births, deaths, marriages, divorces and adoptions; for achieving justice, peace and security of the Nation

In registration of Marriages and Divorce, RITA maintains the register of all the marriages annulments and Divorce that occurs in the country and also maintains a foreign register of marriages and divorces for Tanzanians whose marriages or divorces occurred outside the country.

Registration of Marriage and Divorces is governed by the Law of Marriage Act CAP 29 R.E 2019.  In order to get our service online the applicant is required to register and log into our system through  www.rita.go.tz and click on the eRita services

 

Below is how to apply for different services

  1. 1.     Application for Certificate of no impediment

It is document issued by the office of the Registrar General of Marriages confirming that a citizen of the United Republic Tanzania has no existing marriage record and therefore qualifies to get married outside the country

 

General Requirements for application of certificate of no impediment:

- Applicants Birth Certificates and passport,

- Verification letter from parent/guardian,

- Parent/guardian identity card

- Passport/identity of the intending partner

How the application is done

  • An applicant make online application through www.rita.go.tz and click on the eRita services by filling online application form (RGM12), submit the application online, system generate the bill and make payment of Tsh.300,000/=.
  • Applicants will be notified through their account whether their applications have been accepted or rejected. They may also track their application status through the online system.
  • The system will generate the certificate

 

  1. 2.     Application for license to celebrate marriage.

License to conduct marriage is issued by the Registrar General to minister of religion which qualifies him/her to cerebrate marriage. Registrar General may cancel any license at any time by notice published in the Government Gazette.   

How the application is done  

  • The applicant is required to make application online through eRITA and fill an online application form (RGMF 2) with supporting documents specified in the system.
  • Pre-condition for registration is for Religious Institution Representative should be registered in the system by RITA.
  • System will generate the bill and the applicant will pay the application fee of Tsh. 60,000/=

 NB:        The attachment documents should be in softcopy in PDF format and the passport size should be in PNG.

  1. 3.     Registrar General Special License

The Registrar General may dispense with notice requirement under the Law of Marriage Act where there is sufficient reason to do so supported by requisite documents.

How the application is done: -

  • The applicant fills online application through www.rita.go.tz and click on the eRITA services and proceed to make application with supporting document as evidence on the reasons as to why the Registrar General should waive 21 days’ notice of intention to marry.
  • The application can be accepted or rejected.
  • The system will generate the bill and the applicant will make the payment Tsh. 200,000/=
  • The license will be issued.

 

  1. 4.     Application of license to celebrate marriage in special places

Registrar General may issue a license to the parties to celebrate marriage in special place other than habitually used as a place of public worship or gathering upon the application of intended partner.

How the application is done:-

  • The applicant is required to make application online through eRITA   and proceed to fill the form and attach supporting documents. Applicant must specify the locality place he intended to contract his/her marriage and send the application form online with supporting document.
  • The applicant will be required to make the payments of Tsh. 200,000/=
  • The licence will be issued
  1. 5.     Application of Single Status certificate

It is document issued by the office of the Registrar General of Marriages confirming that a citizen of the United Republic is single.

General Requirements for application of Single Status certificate:

  - Applicants Birth Certificates and passport,

  - Verification letter from parent/guardian,

  - Parent/guardian identity card

 

How the application is done

  • An applicant is required to make online application through our website www.rita.go.tz and click on the eRita services to make application and attach supporting documents, system will generate the bill and the applicant will make payment of Tsh. 200,000/=.
  • Applicants will be notified through their account whether their applications have been accepted or rejected. They may also track their application status through the online system.
  • The system generate the certificate.
  1. 6.     Registration of foreign marriage

Registrar General has a mandate to registers a foreign marriage

How the application is done:-

  • The applicant is required to make application online through eRITA and attach supporting documents which is the verified marriage certificate from abroad (if the marriage certificate is not in English version must be translated first in English version.
  • The applicant will be required to make the payments of Tsh 200,000/=
  • The certificate will be issued.
  1. 7.     Intention to marry

The Law of Marriage required the intended partner to make intention to marry before 21 days of the proposed date.

General Requirements for application of intention to marry:

- Passport size photograph of the intended couple,

  - Passport/identity of the intending couple- Verification letter from parent/guardian,

  - Certificate of no impediment (document which identify the status) for the foreigner

  - Introduction letter from Ward council

How the application is done:-

  • The applicant is required to make application online through eRITA and proceed to fill the form and attach supporting documents. Applicant must specify the locality place he intended to contract his/her marriage and send the application form online with supporting document.
  • The Registrar of Marriage specified will approve and the system generate bill to the applicant.
  • The applicant will be required to make the payments of Tsh. 100,000/=
  • After 21 the intended couple contracted their marriage

 

  1. 8.     Application of Divorce certificate

 

Registrar General issue a divorce certificate upon the application of the parties after the court grant a divorce.

General Requirements for application of Divorce:

      - Judgement from court,

      - Decree from court

      - Marriage certificate

 

How the application is done:-

  • The applicant is required to make application online  www.rita.go.tz then click eRITA and attach supporting documents, system will generate the bill and the applicant will make payment of Tsh.40,000/=
  • Pre-condition for application - Judgment issued by the competent court and there is no further appeal or a time allowed for appeal has expired.
  • Applicants will be notified through their account whether their applications have been accepted or rejected. They may also track their application status through the online system.
  • The certificate will be issued.
  1. 9.     APPLICATION OF REGISTRATION OF FOREIGN DIVORCE

 

Decisions of marriage proceedings issued by competent courts of foreign countries will be recognized and registered in Tanzania.

General Requirements for application of Divorce:

   - Judgement/decree nisi from court,

   - Decree absolute

   - Marriage certificate

   - All the document above must be in Swahili or English.

  • The applicant is required to make application online www.rita.go.tz then click eRITA and attach supporting documents, system will generate the bill and the applicant will make payment of Tsh.200,000/=
  • Applicants will be notified through their account whether their applications have been accepted or rejected. They may also track their application status through the online system.
  • The certificate will be issued.
